Tesla Motors: Driving the Automobile Industry Towards Cleaner Technology

Posted on Posted in Land, Transport

One of the companies leading the way in the push towards sustainability through clean transport is Tesla Motors. Under the lead of Elon Musk, it is fast becoming the company to watch in the automobile industry. Tesla Motors is devoted to the production of all-electric cars that, unlike the proliferation of hybrid cars in recent years, consume no gasoline whatsoever.

With the recent announcement of their Model 3 resulting in a massive number of initial orders (more than 325000 deposits in less than a week, which if paid out would make the car the second best selling model across the entire US for all of 2015), it’s clear that the interest in this approach to cars is mounting.

Such attention has not been an overnight effort, but rather has been the result of a long term, very structured strategy. A company that started out developing a small volume of high end, high cost cars to those able to afford it, Tesla is steadily evolving into a company capable of producing high volume, low cost cars. And most intriguingly of all, it has all been part of the master plan. Take a look here at Elon’s post from 2006:

However, whether Tesla can indeed pull off such a strategy successfully, or whether such dramatic scaling up of its business strains manufacturing capabilities, remains to be seen. Sceptics point to Tesla’s history of failing to deliver on time, as well as existing reliability problems, claiming that such increases in production would only exacerbate these issues. And this is before the dwindling cash reserves of the company are even considered.

But regardless of whether the company succeeds or fails spectacularly, one thing is certain. Elon Musk has in many ways already succeeded in achieving one of his primary goals. One of the more fascinating aspects of Musk’s approach is that he is not in it purely for business motivations. Rather, he sees the transition to sustainable, clean transport as imperative to the future of our planet, and as such, is committed to accelerating that transition.

The entire concept of Tesla Motors, rather than trying to be a monopolizing Goliath, was intended to shake up the automobile industry and encourage an all-electric awakening. Rather than fending off competition in the sector, those keen to follow in the footsteps of Tesla were welcomed. So much so, that Elon Musk famously released Tesla’s patents to the open market in 2014. You can read the post on Tesla’s website here:

With the automobile industry sitting up and taking notice, and a resulting dramatic increase in production or plans for production of both hybrid and all-electric cars, Musk and Tesla Motors have had a profound impact on the automotive transportation industry. Sustainability is in the headlights, and cleaner forms of transportation are in the front seat and taking the wheel.
